Talk on defense. Communicate. Infielders need to talk, talk, talk.

Baserunners always know how many outs. RUN with two outs.
Infielders, be ready to throw the ball "around the horn" after an out is made with nobody on base. TALK.
Hitters, get your bunts down

Catchers, step out and "take charge". TALK. Step out and let everyone know how many outs

"Words of Wisdom"

Arrive early. "On time" is late
Dress in school colors. Wear your high school baseball hat. "Look like" you've already made the team
Wear sleeves (never white sleeves). Gray pants. Belt
Have spikes and tennis shoes / turfs
Be early for every activity. Anticipate "what happens next". Be ready to jump in and take your turn
HUSTLE & ENTHUSIASM. Run / jog everywhere, even if you're the only one
Be a line leader. Stand in front of group when coaches are talking / teaching. Look coaches in the eye
High School teams are not "made" with one hit or one throw. Consistency throughout is the key
Smile. Stand tall. Play with confidence

Commentary from a parent regarding their 5A, Austin area, high school tryout experience:

"There were about 60 kids trying out, however, several of the kids did not look like they had ever played baseball at all! 10-15 players were cut after the first day. The coach timed them in a 60. Outfielders threw 3 balls from shallow center field to home plate while the coach held the radar gun to get a MPH reading. The infielders threw from 3rd to first with the coach once again holding radar gun. The outfielders then took fly balls & the infielders took ground balls turning double plays, etc. Once again, there was a handful of infielders who looked like a ballplayer & the rest looked satisfied if they actually caught the ground ball. We originally were told the coach was going to put 17-19 kids on the freshman team......", high school parent
